Gloriously Ordinary Language

Real. Inclusive. Human.

With Tricia Nicoll and Bryony Shannon

Are you working in or with an organisation where most of the language people use isn’t what you would use in the kitchen with your family, or in the café or pub with your mates?

Do you feel, like we do, that this is not ok?

We think too much of the language people use in and about social care reveals and shapes attitudes and ways of working that prevent people from living gloriously ordinary lives. We believe that the language of social care should be ordinary. Everyday words about everyday life. And we think our language should be glorious. Wonderful words about flourishing lives.

Rehumanise.

Reconnect.

Reimagine.

Gloriously Ordinary Language is an exciting new eight-month programme for local councils and other social care organisations who want to rehumanise their language, reconnect practice with personal and organisational principles and reimagine care and support.

This is how it works.

MONTH 1

A half-day Zoom workshop with 20-30 people working in – and drawing on support from – your organisation. We’ll all listen to each other’s experience of the language of social care, and the impact and influence it has on people’s thinking and behaviour. By the end of this session, you’ll have agreed 5-6 people who want to lead local work on rewriting social care (your team) and you’ll have a good sense of what needs to change.

MONTHS 2 - 7

Six full-day (10am – 4pm) Zoom workshops for your team, and teams from five other places who are also looking to work on their language. These workshops will help you influence how people think and communicate with and about each other, and about the purpose and practice of adult social care.

PURPOSE

For example:

  • Strategy

  • Annual report/Local account

  • Web pages

  • Information leaflet

  • Video script

PRACTICE

For example:

  • Job description

  • Job advert

  • Policy document

  • Practice guidance

  • E-learning module

PEOPLE

For example:

  • Recording conversations

  • Support plans

  • Standard letters

Each team will pick three things to work on during this time – one from each area above. We’ll work on these things in the sessions and support you to work on them in between each session too. You’ll also benefit from sharing ideas and learning from the other teams participating in the programme.

MONTH 8

A full day (10am – 4pm) gathering to meet each other, potentially face-to-face, and share what each team has produced together, celebrate successes and plan next steps.
